SOFIA Workshops and Dates Announced

SOFIA - Society of Football Intermediaries and Agents (association)

Further to last week’s SOFIA update on the ‘Criminal Finances Act’ coming into force, and the subsequent impact on football agents and intermediaries (as well as other football participants), we can now confirm the date and details for the ‘workshops’ that were promised.

These workshops have been coordinated by SOFIA (Society of Football Intermediaries & Agents) with the aim of addressing some of the key issues affecting intermediary activity both today and in the future, and subsequently, the work undertaken in successfully, effectively and professionally representing players, clubs and other football participants.

There is also an update from SOFIA on the latest developments with regards to SOFIA member benefits and general governance in relation to registered intermediaries – however, the workshops will be delivered by specialists in their respective professions and fields to ensure delegates get a fair, thorough and informative presentation on key matters.

In addition to each of the workshops, there will be some hints and tips from the experts on how to get the most from WyScout, and also a ‘WyScout Clinic’ for you to get some ‘one-to-one’ help from the WyScout team, (if required). Not to mention an opportunity to network with other workshop delegates before and after the workshops should you so wish.

You are encouraged to register ASAP, as places for these workshops are deliberately limited (with priority is given to members of SOFIA).

ALL THREE of the Football Intermediary & Agent Workshops are FREE to members of SOFIA as part of the annual membership.

Finance, Tax & Legal Workshop for Football Intermediaries and Agents

Friday 27th October 2017 : 1.30pm – 4.30pm : London,W10

Although this presentation was initially scheduled for early 2018 with the introduction of the ‘Criminal Finances Act and the response we got from people in regards to the SOFIA update on the matter; a decision was taken to bring this workshop forward in the calendar.

It cannot be underestimated how important elements such as tax, finance and law are in the activities of a registered football intermediary (agent), and thus keeping abreast of the latest rules, regulations and laws have never been more important.

The workshop will address such topics such as :

Safeguarding and Welfare Workshop for Football Intermediaries and Agents

Friday 24th November 2017 : 1.30pm – 4.30pm : London,W10

The issues of Safeguarding and Welfare in football, have been placed under the spotlight in recent times ..... and rightly so, with the alarming reports of child abuse in football. Subsequently, the FA have rightly put safeguarding at the forefront of their integrity and governance agenda, demonstrated by the majority of hearings and sanctions filed against 'FA Registered Intermediaries' in early 2017 being related to minors.

For these reasons and many others, it is imperative that professional football intermediaries and agents are more informed of these issues, which for too long have been somewhat ignored. And in having a better understanding of such issues they can play an important role in helping those who are victims of such issues and affected by them in football.

Overseas Players and Playing Overseas Workshop for Football Intermediaries and Agents

Friday 12th January 2018 : 1.30pm – 4.30pm : London,W10

Football is recognised as a worldwide game, watched by billions worldwide and with players of various nationalities playing in leagues all around the world, separated only by a flight (or two) - the complications of where a player can ply their trade and play professionally is a far more difficult equation.

It is not so much a simple task anymore for the players' intermediary (agent) to simply find them the opportunity to play, but they also now need to ensure that these opportunities are legitimate in terms of FIFA, the country where the player wants to play and the association of the club they may be playing for.

The UK whilst being perceived as an easy place for talented professionals to come and work is not so simple for those plying their trade as professional footballers, and with the added complications that may be caused by 'Brexit' for some it is increasingly important that a players intermediary (agent) is aware of the restrictions and implications of a player playing overseas and/or a player looking to come and play professionally in the United Kingdom.
